The Language & Culture Program provides post-secondary training in both Inuktitut and culture. After completion of the required core courses, students will be able to choose to enter an option area which best fits their interests. The program is designed to help students wishing to pursue an interpretor/translator career acquire and develop skills necessary in the field. The first year places special emphasis on language development, communication skills and the technical skills necessary in the interpretor/translator profession. The second year is designed to assist the student to further develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required as an interpretor/translator. Emphasis will be placed on helping the learner acquire specialized vocabulary in technical areas, and on consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.

The minimum admission requirement for all certificate, diploma and degree programs is a high school diploma. Some programs require the successful completion of specific high school courses with a minimum average 1. Applicants must: - Have grade 10, English as determined by College Entry Assessment Test, GED Equivalent, ROA in Humanities or eligible for mature student admission; - Submit a letter of interest explaining why applicant wishes to enter the program; - Submit three letters of reference; - Have oral fluency in English and Inuktitut. Preference will be given to students literate in Inuktitut. 2. Applicant Assessment - Students will be required to write an English/Inuktitut language proficiency test; - Personal suitability will be assessed through an interview with program personnel; - All applications are subject to review by the admissions committee. Official transcripts, documents showing formal and informal academic qualifications, and information about related work experience. An interview may be required. Applicants who received their formal education in a language other than English will be required to submit proof of English language proficiency by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
