Classical Archeology MA

London , United Kingdom
This Master's degree in classical archaeology allows you to undertake advanced study of the archaeology, history and cultural legacies of Ancient Greece and Rome. The course will also give you the key archaeological skills you need to retrieve and evaluate material evidence. You will learn in a culture of active research, with teaching and supervision from world-leading academics working at the cutting-edge in their fields. The course starts with an exploration of the broad themes of classical archaeology, including methodologies and interpretative approaches to the material past. Classical Studies BA

London , United Kingdom
BA Classical Studies allows you to explore and critically analyse Classical culture, history, archaeology, philosophy and literature. Choosing from a wide range of options, you can study the culture and history of Greek and Roman societies across the Mediterranean and Near East, from the Archaic period to the Roman imperial period and Late Antiquity, and the reception of Classical culture in later periods of history. You will also be encouraged to engage in wider debate on how we interpret the Classical world and why this matters - debate that is at the forefront of current research in all disciplines of Classical antiquity. In doing so, you will confront both the admirable and the disturbing facets of Greek and Roman cultures, as we delve into democracy, slavery, sexuality and empire. The BA Classical Studies is a structured programme of taught modules, designed to develop understanding and critical skills and a deep knowledge of Classical history and culture. It involves examining the nature of our knowledge about the past and the way in which histories and texts are written. We encourage you to assess ancient source material (textual and archaeological) and to question accepted histories and traditions about the past, so that you will develop the ability to construct and present a convincing argument.

Constitutional Politics, Law and Theory LLM

London , United Kingdom
This unique Master's degree in law reflects the traditional neglect of constitutionalist approaches to politics in Britain - something which is now changing fast. As the utopia of the ‘end of history’ falters, the rhetoric of security and risk, of crisis in the relation between financial markets and sovereign states, of perpetual war, and of corruption in politics brings about a relentless desire for law and constitutional reform. These expectations, however, are often at odds with the way contemporary social and political theories, and a growing number of constitutional law specialists, conceptualise the sphere of the political. The focus is on two related but distinct processes: the crisis of law and the shift towards exceptional modes of state power; and the demand that law mitigates manifold crises. Questions are raised about law as solution, about its role in the violent imposition of liberal social and market relations, and whether or not we may be able to imagine a different sort of crisis, a different relation between law and the future.

Contemporary History and Politics BA

London , United Kingdom
This programme is offered jointly by our Department of History, Classics and Archaeology and our Department of Politics, which gives you the opportunity to study current political ideas and events in combination with an understanding of the wider historical context of the modern world. The study of history and politics develops the ability to understand how people lived, acted and thought in the past, and the ways in which they act politically in the present. We encourage you to assess written and material evidence, to question accepted histories and explanations, and to construct and present your own arguments. The course includes a wide variety of options across both disciplines, from the history of Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe and Britain, to the study of social and political theory, the analysis of authoritarianism and repressive regimes, and parliamentary democratic practice. You will gain a mix of skills drawn from the two disciplines: the ability to analyse data of different types, to understand the context and meaning of events, and to relate the study of the past to current political issues and developments.
