The mission of the School of Social Work at Brigham Young University is to support the overall mission of generating new knowledge and by educating and training students to use the appropriate knowledge, values, and skills of the social work profession to serve children and families within the context of their specific cultures.

Completion of three prerequisite classes is required from all applicants prior to the application deadline: Introduction to Social Work, Research Methods, and Statistics. These courses must have been taken within the past 7 years with minimum B- grades. Additional courses are recommended. The University requires an undergraduate minimum GPA of 3.0. The typical average GPA for admitted MSW students is 3.7. We do not require the GRE; however, if you take it and your score is sent to BYU, it will be considered as part of your application. Typically, 110-160 students apply for the 40 available slots each year. Transcripts and Degrees Provide evidence of at least the equivalent of a 4 year U.S. bachelor’s as indicated by an unofficial transcript or academic record for each institution attended. GPA Self report your final degree GPA as indicated on your transcript or academic record. International applicants must convert their raw GPA to a 4.0 scale. Tests Take the appropriate entrance test as required by your program of interest and have the official scores sent to BYU. Letters of Recommendation Request letters of recommendation from previous professors or professionals. Three letters are required for all except MBA and EMBA (those require 2). Statement of Intent Describe your educational and career objectives and how graduate work will fit those goals. Resume Check the Resume section of the application to see if your program requires a resume. Other Documents Complete any additional application materials that may be required by your department. English Proficiency Requirement (Non-native English speakers only) International Visa Requirements Provide copies of current U.S. visas and passport biographic pages for yourself and any dependents that may accompany you, along with proof of finances for the duration of your program. Pay and submit your application online. Pay the $50 application fee and submit the application before the published graduate program deadline.
