Caltech's Applied Physics program was founded by faculty who could foresee research subjects not represented in traditional engineering and physics programs. Founded in 1970, it was among the very first Applied Physics programs in the country and has had a profound influence on science and technology, including fiber optic communications. Originally encompassing semiconductor devices and lasers, today it includes subjects spanning quantum engineering to physical biology, and reflects new and varied intersections within science and technology. Applied Physics is a broad field of study that lies at the intersection of physics and many other fields of science and engineering. The applied physics option at Caltech is accordingly a highly multidisciplinary program that is designed to train students in a broad spectrum of physics and engineering fields at an advanced level. Moreover, it is our goal to cultivate abilities in our graduates to apply this knowledge throughout their lives so as to make technological and scientific breakthroughs at the edge of current knowledge.

To successfully complete the online application process, you must: • Create a free account with CollegeNET to submit the application form online. • Include payment of the application fee or submit a fee waiver request. • Upload a Statement of Purpose. • Request GRE, TOEFL, and/or IELTS test scores to be sent directly to the California Institute of Technology (Institutional Code 4034). • Upload an official electronic copy of your transcripts or online grade reports issued by your college or university. Updated grade reports for terms in progress are not required. Students who have been admitted and plan to attend Caltech will be required to submit an official copy of all transcripts from the Registrar’s Office prior to enrollment. • Register three individuals from whom you will request letters of recommendation. • Upload a CV or Resume.
