Программы обучения California Institute of Technology

History

Pasadena , United States

Students who choose the history option will learn how to do history—how to think critically about past societies and their development, how to read evidence closely, and how to express arguments in writing. With the guidance of a faculty adviser in history, students taking the option will explore the range of human experience in the realms of politics, culture, religion, and economics, as well as science and technology. They will learn both to challenge and revise existing historical narratives and question their own ideas and assumptions about the past. Students will develop the writing skills that will enable them to use historical sources to make effective arguments, and they will receive extensive feedback on their writing from their adviser and from other faculty members.

Information and Data Sciences

California Institute of Technology

Pasadena , United States

The information and data sciences are concerned with the acquisition, storage, communication, processing, and analysis of data. These intellectual activities have a long history, and Caltech has traditionally occupied a position of strength with faculty spread out across applied mathematics, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, astronomy, economics, and many others disciplines. In the last decade, there has been a rapid increase in the rate at which data are acquired with the objective of extracting actionable knowledge -- in the form of scientific models and predictions, business decisions, and public policies.

Materials Science

California Institute of Technology

Pasadena , United States

The aim of the Materials Science option is to prepare students for research, professional practice, or advanced study in a rapidly advancing interdisciplinary field. The program builds on the core curriculum to develop analytical competence and use it for individualized research, culminating in a one-year senior thesis. Materials Science students develop professional independence, creativity, leadership, and the capacity for continuing professional and intellectual growth.

Materials Science

California Institute of Technology

Pasadena , United States

The graduate program is designed to give students an understanding of general phenomena in synthesis–structure–property relationships in all materials, plus a detailed understanding of phenomena for at least one particular class of materials. After completing the Special Regulations/Ph.D. program, students have pursued careers in teaching and research at colleges and universities, in research for government and industry, in the operation and control of manufacturing processes, and in management and development positions in the materials industry. Students may enter the graduate program in materials science with undergraduate preparation in physics, chemistry, engineering, or materials science.

Mathematics

California Institute of Technology

Pasadena , United States

Mathematics combines abstract logical thought with concrete investigations into symmetry and order. It looks for patterns, makes analogies and formalizes the conclusions succinctly, in a way that they are useful in a variety of places where there is structure. Those who major in math go well beyond the basics to study calculus, differential equations and statistics, the basic structures in algebra, analysis and geometry, as well as rudiments of combinatorics and set theory. Juniors and seniors are given the opportunity to focus their studies in an area of interest by taking advanced topics courses and through reserach with faculty members. Students learn to write coherent and complete proofs of various assertions, to work out non-trivial examples and, when possible, use computational tools. Our undergraduate program has a special emphasis on equipping the students with needed tools for a successful research career. The knowledge and skills acquired here are consistent with admissions to graduate programs in peer institutions. Seniors are encouraged, but not required, to do a bachelor's thesis in an advanced topic.

Mathematics

California Institute of Technology

Pasadena , United States

Caltech has one of the best mathematics departments in the country, and offers a very strong graduate program. The graduate program in mathematics is designed to prepare students for research careers in universities, industry, or government. Accordingly, only those students seeking the Ph.D. degree are admitted. In the past fifteen years, Caltech has awarded doctorates in mathematics to about 90 students, many of whom have moved into attractive positions as members of university faculty and in industry and government research. Graduate students are encouraged to engage in creative research work after passing their qualifying exams. As a result of the informal atmosphere, small size of the department, and the large faculty to student ratio, graduate students have ample opportunity to interact closely with the faculty in research.
