Toxicology is the study of poisons, drawing heavily on life and physical sciences, as well as being an applied practically-based subject. It is designed to acquaint students with the breadth of Toxicology, with a considerable emphasis on its practical application. The first semester consists of a foundation in Pharmacology and Toxicology and their applications. Workshops provide students with a theoretical basis in data handling and interpretation.
The second semester consists of lectures in advanced topics such as Risk Assessment, Target Organ Toxicity, Reproductive and Regulatory Toxicology. In addition there is more emphasis on laboratory mini-projects (in vivo, in vitro & molecular projects) that introduce students to the practical elements of toxicity testing and data interpretation. There are also a number of written projects on toxicity testing used in the drug industry as well as recent advances in toxicity assays which involve self-directed learning.
In the third semester, there is a 3-month research project to investigate an aspect of toxicology and deliver a seminar on this area. This involves the student preparing a research proposal, carrying out the lab-based project and preparing a thesis on the findings.
Water security is one of the main threats facing humanity. Engineers will be the primary professionals tackling this problem. This programme will provide engineers will the technical competences to provide solutions to deliver safe/clean water. The programme will also give opportunities to students to study economics and the project management of large projects. Key components of this programme are a focus on understanding and using modern hydraulic modelling tools, and working in design groups.
Water engineering has been taught at graduate level at NUI Galway for over 40 years. Over 400 water resource engineering professionals from 56 countries around the world have received their postgraduate qualifications at NUI Galway. This programme has developed from the very successful International Postgraduate Hydrology Programme originally run by Professor Eamonn Nash. Staff are involved in large-scale funded research projects in water
resources, facilitated by our world-class research facilities.
This programme aims to prepare graduates to effectively contribute to diabetes management through comprehensive academic and research training.
The course is delivered through blended learning (online content and face to face workshops), with an attendance requirement of approximately 10 days per 4 month semester (please note some workshops may be scheduled at weekends).
This new postgraduate programme builds on the rich tradition of 50 years of the teaching of Political Science and Sociology at NUI Galway, offering students the opportunity to critically explore social and political forces that impact on contemporary issues. The MA (Politics and Sociology) provides the theoretical and empirical skills that graduates of Politics and Sociology require for the analyses of why our societies are the way that they are and if they can be improved.
The programme comprises of core taught modules in Politics and Sociology and a thesis of 20,000 words which will be supervised by a member of academic staff in the School, providing one to one support and expertise in the student’s chosen field of enquiry
The Higher Diploma in Fine Art is a joint Burren College of Art/ National University of Ireland, Galway programme based at the Burren College of Art. It is equivalent to the American Post Baccalaureate programme and is known informally as the 'Post Bac'. Students of the Post Bac register as students of both Burren College of Art and NUI Galway. The programme operates in association with the Royal College of Art, London, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, both of which provide visiging faculty to the programme.
The aim of the programme is to assist graduate students to identify their artistic identity and interests and to prepare them for the next step in their artistic careers.
Post Bac students have their own dedicated studio space at the Burren College of Art and the availability of all BCA faculty as appropriate.
Studio practice and critique is at the core of the programme, taking the form of negotiated projects for independent study that also involve portfolio preparation and career planning. Studio courses provide teaching in a choice of disciplines where you work alongside undergraduate students. Historical and Critical Studies examines key concepts in modern and contemporary art to assist you in contextualising your emerging art practice.
The Burren: Culture and Environment introduces you to a wide range of environmental and cultural studies in the west of Ireland, ranging from natural history and geology to archaeology to modern history. You will also visit galleries and museums in Dublin, with optional trips to London and Berlin offered.
The Bachelor of Science degree is a programme which allows you to take a variety of subjects in the general scientific field before deciding to specialise in one scientific area for your four-year honours degree. It is the ideal choice for students who want to study Science, but are not yet ready to narrow their options to a specific topic. You can take subjects from the Physical Sciences, for example, and combine them with subjects from the Biological Sciences, the Mathematical Sciences, or the Earth and Ocean Sciences. Opportunities exist to choose from the wide range of subjects offered in the college. Please note, however, that quotas apply to second year subjects in the BSc Science programme.
The Bachelor of Science will give you a solid foundation in general Science subjects during your first three years of study. These include subjects you may already have studied, like Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics, but also include Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Botany and Plant Science, Microbiology, Zoology, Pharmacology and the Earth and Ocean Sciences. With such a diverse range of scientific topics, students often find they need time to discover which specialism is for them.
