Chemical and Biomedical Engineering

McMaster University

Hamilton , Canada

Chemical Engineering focuses on the design of processes capable of producing new materials, energy and clean water in a highly effective manner - processes in which the human body excels. Pioneering work done on understanding the interactions between blood and the surfaces of implanted materials (such as stents), was done in our Department and that work has impacted the lives of thousands of patients receiving these implants. About one third of our faculty members work in bio related areas: some on medical applications, such as drug delivery and biomedical device design; others on bioprocessing, investigating how to produce therapeutic agents effectively.

Chemical and Physical Sciences

McMaster University

Hamilton , Canada

Everything we know is either matter or energy. Understanding the ways in which matter and energy behave and interact is critical to an understanding of the universe at every level, from the submicroscopic constituents of matter to the macroscopic behaviour of galaxies and star clusters. This understanding comes through a mix of mathematical description, computational modelling and experimental investigations. These techniques are covered in Chemical & Physical Sciences I, which is the appropriate preparation for Level II programs in Astrophysics, Biophysics, Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Medical Physics, and Physics.

Civil and Biomedical Engineering

McMaster University

Hamilton , Canada

The diverse expertise within the Department of Civil Engineering enable us to address several grand challenges related to biomedical engineering with the goal of building healthier communities. These included studying the fate and transport of pathogens in ground water systems and their subsequent impact on the environment and human health. In addition, we study flow of contaminated water (e.g. with radionuclides or heavy metals) in fractured rock systems.

Cognitive Science of Language

McMaster University

Hamilton , Canada

How do we think? How do we give expression to our thoughts? These are fundamental questions posed by linguists investigating the ways language might be organized in the mind, psychologists who study perception, computer scientists wishing to model intelligence, or curious individuals wondering about the nature of human cognition. Answers lie within the human mind-brain, and the clearest, most observable expressions of human thought are found embedded and reflected in the processes of language.
