Overview
Since its establishment in 1946, the school has evolved from a small liberal arts college to a large research university that ranks among the top public universities in the United States. Greene's Guides names Binghamton University as one of the "Public Ivies," a publicly funded university considered as providing a quality of education comparable to those of the Ivy League. The university is designated an R1 Doctoral University with very high research activity according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
