Engage imaginatively with a wide range of contemporary and historical literature, focusing particularly on tradition, innovation, and diversity. At Keele we know that English literature is literature written in English, and this can originate from many places: the United Kingdom, the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.
You’ll explore the significance of texts within their originating cultures and historical periods and explore a range of approaches to literary study. You’ll consider the historical, socio- political, economic, gender and geographical contexts of fiction, poetry and drama from the medieval period to the present day.
You might explore links between literature and film, or engage with exciting new genres such as the graphic novel. You’ll become an imaginative and critical thinker as you explore subjects such as the importance of story, the novel, writing for the screen, post-colonialism, depictions of maternity and scandal.

You will have the chance to develop your creative practice skills alongside the analytical study of screen and literary texts. You will explore the core areas of Film Studies, with Keele’s combined emphasis on local and global film cultures, and its focus on the key concepts and issues in film history and theory.
Looking across a range of films and filmmaking contexts, from Classical Hollywood to contemporary transnational cinemas, you will analyse, discuss and debate the cultural significance and creative possibilities of this powerful medium. Alongside this, you will study creative writing in every semester, experimenting with poetry, prose and screenwriting in order to develop your writing skills and to become a mature practitioner.
You’ll be taught by a team who are research active and expert in their fields, with a commitment to lively and innovative teaching methods. The module options also allow students to combine their learning and skills in creative filmmaking production; while throughout the course, you will be able to try out your work in a critical but supportive group framework, providing a vital source of feedback and reflection on your own practice.
The Film Studies programme at Keele looks at the medium across both local and international contexts, combining its focus on British and other national cinemas with the analysis of an increasingly global film culture. It combines an understanding of the history of film as industry and art form, and an analysis of its most contemporary trends, including its relationship to television. Led by experienced lecturers, the programme at Keele enables students to grasp the significance of film across cultural contexts, its importance as a mode of popular entertainment, and its centrality to expressions of individual, national, transnational, racial and sexual identities. You will also, if you wish, have the opportunity to combine theoretical and historical study with creative filmmaking practice options.

Media and Cultural Studies is an exciting and developing discipline that draws together theories and practices from a range of disciplines such as Media Studies, Film and Television Studies, English and Sociology.
The course involves three main aspects:
- the study of theories and ideas about media and cultural production in a global context
- the critical analysis of cultural texts and practices from around the world
- engagement in practical creative production.
The MA in Global Media and Culture seeks to explore the relationship between these three areas and to show how knowledge of each informs and influences the others. In addition, it will provide you with the skills necessary for academic study at an advanced level, either for those wishing to go on to further academic research, or as advanced preparation for those interested in pursuing careers in a range of media and culture industries.
