Program overview

Technology Enhanced Learning is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists. The academic team is constantly experimenting with new ways of facilitating interaction, including the use of mobile technology and social media. The excellent digital resources for your learning include electronic versions of historical newspapers like the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and Washington Post, as well as thousands of documents relating to the American Civil War, the civil rights and black power movements, popular culture, politics, and other key themes and periods in US history, culture and politics. Throughout your course you will have a Personal Guidance Tutor who will provide support for your personal and academic development. Your Tutor will help you manage the transition to university smoothly and successfully, and will continue to arrange regular meetings during which you can discuss any aspect of university life. Northumbria University has brought together expert academic staff to ensure that your student experience is intellectually challenging and hugely enjoyable. Members of the team play an active role in the British Association for American Studies, which promotes and supports the study of the USA. Professor Brian Ward serves as the Association’s vice chair while Dr Joe Street organised its 60th anniversary conference, held right here at Northumbria University. Our commitment to teaching excellence has been recognised via the Student Union’s Student-Led Teaching Awards. Many members of the American Studies staff were commended for their engaging teaching and overall commitment to their students’ education.
