The Master's in American Studies at the University of Amsterdam is a one-year programme, taught entirely in English. We are based in history, but our students come from many disciplines: literature, media studies, cultural studies, sociology, art history and more. Interdisciplinary pollination means our field of inquiry is broad: Moby-Dick and Mickey Mouse, the sentimental novel and the war on terror.
The Master's programme in Ancient History offers students:
In-depth knowledge and understanding of the political, social, cultural and religious history of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.
Intensive classes consisting of small groups and direct personal contact with tutors.
Thorough training in analysing complicated historical issues using divergent source material as well as developing reporting skills (both orally and in writing) on historical debates in Greek and Roman history.
This Master’s degree programme is offered by two universities. The University of Amsterdam and VU Amsterdam combined their expertise on the field of ancient history and archaeology in the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA). This merging of specialists from various academic disciplines creates a stimulating environment for collaboration and study.
To study Information Studies is to learn how information is organised, preserved, curated and presented in contemporary society, but also how data and information are transforming lives, economies, social relations and politics. The Master's programme consists of a theoretically-based first semester in which students will critically analyse core information and archival theories.
The second semester of Information Studies includes an extensive Advanced Theories Lab, a thesis workshop and a final course in which students synthesise their theoretical and practical insights by reflecting on the major challenges of information creation, management and use.
The programme aims to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and the practical instruments to give an analysis of the characteristic argumentative, rhetorical-strategic and stylistic properties of texts from various domains, while offering them insight into the main theories and methods available for analysing and evaluating the functionality, effectiveness and reasonableness of communication.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a field that develops intelligent algorithms and machines. Examples include: self-driving cars, smart cameras, surveillance systems, robotic manufacturing, machine translations, internet searches, and product recommendations.
Courses offer students the foundation required to conduct research in all issues related to ecology and evolution. The programme's curriculum covers a variety of topics in different disciplines, including evolutionary ecology, modelling of biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics, data analysis and statistics, paleo-ecology, microbiobial ecology, genomics, spatial ecology and conservation.
