Astrophysics is the application of physics to the study of astronomical objects and phenomena. The goal of astrophysics is to understand and explain how astronomical objects and phenomena occur and work. During the course of your studies, much of your learning will occur while actively working on problems in class, during tutorials, and in the laboratory. This degree will provide you with practice conducting experiments and observations, computational and logic skills, and strong problem-solving abilities.
Your courses include:
Calculus for Engineers and Scientists, Electromagnetic Theory I, Introduction to Astrophysics, Linear Methods I, Classical Physics
Biochemists are curious about how and why biological processes happen, and they research answers down to the molecular level. During the course of your studies, much of your learning will occur while actively working on problems in class, during tutorials, and in the laboratory. This degree will provide you with an understanding of the theory and practical use of current techniques used in biochemistry research, and will give you an understanding of newly evolving fields such as bioinformatics and functional proteomics.
Your courses include:
Biochemistry of Life Processes, Linear Methods I, Mechanics, University Calculus I, Energy Flow in Biological Systems
Students with a bachelor’s degree who are looking enjoy a wide variety of research that is at the forefront of many fields should consider getting a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MSc Thesis) degree. Research can include everything from biochemistry to molecular research, as well as cellular and developmental biology. It also ranges from genetics and immunology to bioinformatics, with applications to cancer and clinical research. As they deepen their skills, students will get to enjoy the amenities of a large city near the outdoor leisure activities of the Rocky Mountains. Completion of the program usually takes two years of full-time study.
Specializations:Bioinformatics
A master’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology will give you the pre-requisite for a PhD.
Bioinformatics focuses on the unique issues that occur when you apply computers to biological systems. During the course of your studies, you'll receive comprehensive training in computer science, mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology. During the course of your studies, much of your learning will occur while actively working on problems in class and during labs. You'll learn how to apply mechanical theories and concepts to living systems with special emphasis on the human body and its movement, structure, and function.
Your courses include:
Activity (Essence and Experience), Calculus for Engineers and Scientists, Introduction to Research in Kinesiology, Introduction to Socio-Cultural Aspects of Sport, Human Anatomy and Physiology I.
The Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program MEng degree offers a focus on research that prepares graduates for work in industry, academia or government. There is a heavier course load compared to an MSc degree. Areas of application range from prevention and healthy aging to improved diagnostics, as well as technologies for better therapeutics. The degree is part of an interdisciplinary program aimed at students with backgrounds in areas such as engineering, kinesiology, physical sciences, medicine, or life sciences.
A master’s degree in biomedical engineering is usually considered a final degree and is not admissible for entry into a PhD program.
Biomedical Sciences involves ground breaking scientific research in areas such as cancer biology, neuroscience, gastrointestinal physiology, cardiovascular sciences, biochemistry, genetics and infectious diseases. During the course of your studies, much of your learning will occur while actively working on problems in class, during tutorials, in the laboratory and through summer research studentships.
