Linguistics has been taught at Bangor University since the 1960s, making us one of the first departments dedicated to the study of Linguistics in the UK. Today, we are a vibrant and friendly department with staff who get to know their students as individuals and remain committed to high-quality teaching and have a strong research ethos. We are passionate about teaching and ensuring our students gain excellent skills in critical reading and research (including dedicated language facilities available to all students who study with us). The School has an excellent record of research excellence in a wide range of areas. Academic staff in the School pursue research in two main areas: Bilingualism and Cognitive Linguistics. The world-class quality of research carried out in the School has been confirmed by the 2014 REF (Research Excellence Framework), the most recent national assessment of research quality.
