You will find a unique flexibility in all of our programs, allowing you to explore other areas of interest across the Bishop’s campus, and design your own personal degree. Most of our students combine their study of Music with another discipline – Drama, History, Languages, Sciences, Psychology, Business – our students have tried everything!
In the study of philosophy and the philosophical tradition, students enter into a conversation with some of history’s greatest minds. This is, in itself, a tremendously enriching experience. But it pays the even greater dividend of helping us shape our views on such fundamental issues as love and friendship, art and science, justice and community, politics and religion, meaning itself.
Physics is often regarded as the cornerstone of the Natural Sciences. It involves the study of the interaction of matter and energy on the most fundamental levels and has been very successful in revealing many of nature’s most profound secrets. It encompasses a diverse range of disciplines including astrophysics, electronics, particle physics, and solid state physics.
The Master’s Program is designed to give students a deeper appreciation of physics while giving them a comprehensive exposure to research methodology that will allow them to become independent researchers. Research is being carried out in the following areas:
- Astrophysics (High Energy Phenomena, Stellar and Binary Evolution, Pulsars)
- Solid State Physics (Condensed Matter Physics, Many-Body Theory, Highly Correlated Systems)
- Theoretical Physics (Cosmology, Gravitational Theory, Dark Energy)
- Particle Physics (Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics)
Knowing the political system increases one’s capacity for choice. Therefore, a knowledge of Canadian, provincial or local politics presents the student with greater opportunities and advantages within his or her society. Political Studies also explores other political systems, e.g. the American presidential system, the European Union, communist and post-communist political systems and the impact of the new states on the emerging political economy of a new international order. The discipline allows for a critical evaluation of society and its institutions through a study of the history of political theory; in addition, the student may engage in a problem solving approach through empirical policy research using survey methods.
Psychology is the science of how we think, feel and behave. It is a field with both broad purpose in enhancing our knowledge of human behaviour, as well as having important applications for the local and wider community. Studying Psychology at Bishop’s is being part of a warm, tightly-knit community with many benefits.
The Religion Department is a community of students and faculty engaged in the exploration of religion: the different ways faith is expressed and practiced, the historical and cultural contexts of religions and their texts, as well as the interconnections between religion and other areas of human life — philosophical thought, the psychological, social, political, and economic dimensions, and the presence of religion and religious symbols in literature and fine arts, etc.
The Department provides students with theoretical and methodological tools and substantive insights which can assist them in understanding social life, social organization, and action. Our programmes are designed to provide students with a broad intellectual and sociological background which will help prepare them for a variety of careers and for advanced study at graduate school. The small size of our programme and the dedication of our faculty, allow us to provide personal attention to students and extensive access to faculty. Having relatively few requirements (seven courses in the Major), we allow students substantial flexibility in meeting individual intellectual pursuits.
The Sports Studies program provides an intensive study of sport and exercise in society. It’s designed to encourage students to adopt an interdisciplinary perspective that gathers together the individual, local, national and international dimensions of sport and exercise. Consequently, it exposes students to the social, biological, political, business and economic aspects of sport in sport in society. It also provides opportunities for practical experiences.
