Through the methods and concepts of art history, students learn the ‘visual’ language of images as they acquire knowledge and understanding of all forms of visual arts ranging from earliest cave paintings to latest new media installations, from monumental to miniature.
At the end of their program, all students are required to undertake an internship with an arts organization of their choice, arranged by the Programme Director. This organization can be located anywhere in the world, and often opens doors to future employment.
This program is ideal for students who wish to combine their business studies with a different subject. The program structure allows for a second major or two minors, which give ample room for a student to embrace the richness of a liberal education.
The goal of this program is to complement the potential that students developed doing their primary major. Graduates of this program will be able to adequately manage projects in their own field and assume leadership positions more rapidly.
The Biochemistry program offers both an Honours degree, which prepares students for graduate studies or for professional schools, and a Majors degree, which provides students more flexibility in their program. The program places strong emphasis on mastering the fundamentals of experimental biochemistry, and provides students with well-equipped laboratory facilities, first-hand experience with modern laboratory equipment, and close instructional contact with professors.
We offer Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees in two areas: Health Science, which focuses on human biology, and Biodiversity and Ecology, which concentrates on non-human organisms and their environment. For more info on the difference between the programs and the courses available in each, see the Courses & Programs page.
The program uses the craft-brewing industry as its model, not only because it is one of the fastest growing industries in North America, but because this industry is representative of the international brewing community and demonstrates a deep appreciation for the rich history of beer and brewing. Our students are encouraged to experiment with recipes and brewing regimens in order to understand how access to ingredients and tradition led to characteristic regional beer styles and how globalization of brewing ingredients has led to a renaissance, some might say resurrection, of flavourful beers.
This stream is particularly interesting for students who plan to take over from the family business or are interested in a general business education. They may select courses from any concentration based upon their personal interest and objectives. Students are advised to consult with the Chair or the Academic Advisor for assistance in course selection.
The Chemistry Department has an excellent set of modern instruments (eg. 400 MHZ NMR), computers, and other equipment which is used by undergraduates in their laboratory courses and in research projects. This is in contrast to large universities where many instruments are reserved for graduate students only. Students at Bishop’s learn much from their extensive use of modern instrumentation and equipment, and benefit greatly from this knowledge in future employment and graduate studies.
