The MSc in Data-Intensive Astrophysics has been designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge needed for a career in a range of areas including academic research as well technical, development and engineering positions in the “in-demand” field of “Big Data” and related scientific fields. By combining data analysis and computational techniques with a core science discipline, the course is intended to satisfy the increasing demand for well-qualified postgraduates who are equipped with the expertise to respond to a range of challenges arising from this exciting field. It has been estimated that “Big Data” has already added thousands of new jobs to the UK economy and this is likely to increase as new approaches to data transform the public, private and academic sectors.
The course is delivered by members of our Data Innovation Research Institute, which was recently established to conduct research into the aspects of managing, analysing and interpreting massive volumes of textual and numerical information.

Taught by experts in Statistics, Operational Research and Computer Science, this programme will help students develop both the theoretical understanding and practical experience of applying methods drawn from data science and analytics. This will equip students with a range of in-demand skills for extracting and handling ‘big data’, discovering and communicating meaningful patterns from the data, and applying modelling tools to help businesses and government organisations make better decisions.
Documentaries are a vital, successful and constantly evolving media, with growing places for their screening. Our MA in Digital Documentaries will enable you to integrate the theory and practice of documentary film and to turn your ideas into innovative films for a variety of audiences.
Intensive practical workshops, group sessions and one-to-one guidance will help you locate subjects and stories that matter to you, find a method of making and a mode of encounter with your subject, develop distinct shooting and editing strategies, and evolve your own unique visual language.
The MSc Eco Cities course addresses how cities can be planned and built to promote low carbon lifestyles. You will explore how ecological development can mitigate climate change and promote more sustainable ways of living.
The course addresses the serious and complex questions of how cities can be planned and managed in a more resource efficient way. These include:
- What is a low carbon and ecological (sustainable) city?
- How can city and regional planning effectively guide sustainable development?
- Can cities be planned and built to promote low carbon lifestyles and foster ecological development that can mitigate climate change?
- How can urban areas adapt to climate change?
The programme will equip you with a thorough grounding in the theory, concepts, principles and techniques of the core subject areas of the discipline: macroeconomics, microeconomics and quantitative analysis. It aims to provide you with knowledge of the workings of the UK economy and the ability to use that knowledge in a range of contexts.
We will introduce you to the breadth and depth of economic analysis and offer you the opportunity to acquire knowledge and technique across a number of specialised areas. These include industrial economics, economic history, labour economics and international economics.
Economics is a numerate and increasingly mathematical subject and, consistent with other universities, some modules will have a quantitative element while others will be of a highly mathematical nature.
An Economics degree at Cardiff University provides you with a thorough understanding of economic analysis and aims to stimulate you to value this analysis in understanding economic problems and a wider range of social and political issues. Studying Economics provides a rigorous training that can be a useful foundation for future careers.
Our BSc Education is designed for students who have an interest in education and who are looking for the opportunity to pursue this interest in a broad social science context.
Your study will be informed by our research in education and the latest developments in policy and practice, encompassing aspects of culture and identity, childhood and youth, gender and ethnicity, and social justice and inclusion.
Core modules are aimed at developing a deep understanding of the social, historical, political, economic and developmental contexts of education – in Wales, the UK and internationally.
Studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering puts you at the centre of a vibrant and fast-moving discipline of relevance to industries such as electronics, information technology, manufacturing, energy generation and supply, transport, and communications.
This research-led course balances laboratory sessions with lectures and hands-on practical experiences. Our strong industrial links offer opportunities for work placements and possible sponsorship during your period of study.
This course is reviewed annually with input from our industrial partners to ensure that the modules taught are at the cutting edge and reflect the current state of the industry.
English language at Cardiff has a distinctive character. As would be expected of any good course, you will be provided with a rigorous grounding in the analysis of the language.
You will learn such essential linguistic tools as phonetics, grammar and discourse analysis from those who are helping develop those fields. Since we take a broad approach to language, you will also learn how to analyse the types of multimodal texts (for example combining word, image and sound) that predominate in contemporary media.
Language analysis, though, is just the starting point. What makes Cardiff special is our focus on the intersection of language with culture, society, politics and mind. While arming you with technical skills of analysis, we then expect you to grapple with exciting theories that will enable you to take into account the multifarious aspects of the context of language use and interpret the communication in a complex and meaningful way.
This single honours degree allows you to combine English Language and Literature in a cohesive and creative way. The first year is split equally between the two subjects, but in years two and three you will be able to choose to take more of your modules in either language or literature, depending on your own interests and career aspirations.
