Program overview
CMU's Biochemistry (B.S., B.A.) program is an interdisciplinary biochemistry program providing students with fundamental knowledge and a broadly applicable skillset in biochemistry & molecular biology obtained through rigorous coursework, hands-on laboratory experiences, and mentored research.
CMU is the only public university in Michigan to have a required thesis-based research capstone for all chemistry and biochemistry majors. Every student works one-on-one with a faculty member to design and execute a research project, then communicate their findings through a written thesis and a poster presentation. Biochemistry majors have the flexibility to work with faculty form various Departments and Colleges, including Chemistry & Biochemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, and the College of Medicine. Many students publish in peer-reviewed journals and travel to present their work at regional or national scientific meetings.

Step 2: Official transcripts
Official transcripts should be sent directly to the Admissions Office by all secondary and post-secondary institutions which you have attended. Transcripts must include English translations.
Step 3: Passport
Please submit a copy of the biographic page of your passport.
Step 4: English proficiency
If you are not a citizen or permanent resident of a country exempt from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), you must demonstrate a proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (minimum score of 77)
Pearson Test of English (minimum score of 53)
ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112
If you have not taken one of the English competency tests listed above, or if your score falls below the requirement for admission, you may work toward meeting the English proficiency requirements by applying to CMU's undergraduate Bridge Program or English Language Institute (ELI).
Step 5: ACT/SAT score
Students competing in intercollegiate athletics must submit a qualifying ACT or SAT score to meet NCAA eligibility requirements. This step only applies to intercollegiate student-athletes.
Career opportunities
Biochemistry graduates have a variety of career options, including work as an agricultural chemist, biochemist, college or university professor, environmental chemist, high school teacher, materials scientist or toxicologist. Employment of biochemists is projected to grow 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. More biochemists will be needed to develop biological products and processes that improve our lives.
