Program overview

Electrical engineers have contributed to the creation, development and advancement of electrification; electronics, radio, TV telephone, cellular phones, laser and fiber optic communications; computers, computer networks and the Internet; robotics and automation; and medical and imaging technologies. Electrical Engineering students are encouraged to work with faculty on research or design projects through Independent Studies, the University Honors Program and the Electrical Engineering Project. Their project work includes Computerized Abstraction of ECG Feature Variability in Mitral Valve Prolapse, Image Compression, Adaptive Noise Canceller and Equalizer, Air Flow Sensor, Virtual Reality Device, and Design of Musical Synthesizer based on Programmable Light-to-Frequency Converter. Those students with exceptional ability and promise can participate in the University Honors program Senior honors students undertake independent research, present their research at an annual University Honor Research day and submit a senior honors thesis. Students also can join various student chapters of professional organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Society of Women Engineers, Society of Black Engineers and Eta Kappa Nu (the electrical engineering honor society). Faculty members have accompanied students on field trips and conferences, and advised them in design and presentation competitions such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Student Micromouse Competition and Paper Presentation Contests. Local firms have conducted seminars and workshops at the Metropolitan Campus free to any Fairleigh Dickinson students. The North Jersey Section of the IEEE, the largest engineering association with 350,000 members worldwide, also has conducted seminars at the Metropolitan Campus. The Gildart Haase School of Computer Sciences and Engineering has invited guest speakers from the local industry and nearby institutions, including the world renown Prof. Maurice Karnaugh whose minimization tool for logic gates, the Karnaugh Map, was named after him. Fairleigh Dickinson Electrical Engineering students have earned top honors and awards at the annual Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) Student Micromouse Competition and Paper Presentation Contests held by the North Jersey section. University College at Fairleigh Dickinson University has developed the Support Our Student (SOS) program to enhance student's academic success and to help in the retention of freshmen. The merits of the SOS program have been lauded in The New York Times. Courses under SOS program include many fundamental courses needed by electrical engineering students --- physics, chemistry and calculus.
