The Master's in American Studies at the University of Amsterdam is a one-year, English-language programme, covering the history, politics, and culture of the United States. Students explore key issues in American Studies scholarship, as well as rich primary sources from the US and beyond.

A university Bachelor’s degree The Master’s in American Studies is open for application to all students with a Bachelor’s degree in History from the UvA or from another accredited university. But American Studies is also an interdisciplinary pursuit: the programme is open to students with other Bachelor’s degrees in the humanities or social sciences, provided they have successfully followed a minor in American Studies or 30 ECTS credits worth of courses relating to American culture and history. That includes but is not limited to: English, media studies, sociology, literary studies, anthropology, cultural studies, political science, European studies, art history, or communication science. The Examinations Board will decide whether you meet this prerequisite on the basis of your application file. The level of the Bachelor's degree from a foreign higher education institution must be equal to three years of Dutch university education, to be judged by the Examinations Board. Hbo-bachelor not eligible It is not possible to apply to this programme with a degree from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences (hbo). We do not offer a preparatory programme (schakelprogramma) for this MA. English language requirements All students applying for an English-taught Master's programme are required to be proficient users of academic English before being allowed to enrol.
