Program overview

The Master's programme in Ancient History offers students a stimulating environment in which to study a broad range of historical issues pertaining to the ancient world. The course is unique in that it offers a joint degree programme in which the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit collaborate, allowing students to become acquainted with the specialisations of a wide range of staff members of both universities. Students will follow a focused programme of courses and be able to develop their own interests within the field of Greek and Roman antiquity.

A university Bachelor’s degree The Master’s programme in Ancient History is open for application to students with a Bachelor’s degree from the UvA or the VU, or a recognised equivalent from another accredited university in: Ancient Studies Archaeology Greek and Latin Language and Culture History The level of the Bachelor’s degree from a foreign higher education institution must be equal to three years of Dutch university education (to be judged by the Selection Committee). Hbo-bachelor not eligible It is not possible to apply to this programme with a degree from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences (hbo). We do not offer a preparatory programme (schakelprogramma) for this MA. English language requirements New Master's students should be able to speak, read, write and understand English at an advanced academic level. Please check carefully whether you already meet the English language requirements or whether you need to arrange to take an official English language test.
