Program overview

At the beginning of the first year all students must enroll in the compulsory course Molecular Biology of the Cell. Further elective and compulsory coursework and research training largely depends on the individual preferences and the choice for one of the above mentioned specialisations.

1. Prior education To be eligible for the Medical Biology tracks of the Master's programme in Biomedical Sciences, you must hold a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences or Psychobiology. 2. Grade point average and additional requirements You have an overall grade point average (GPA) equivalent to at least: 3.0 (American system) 2.1 (a second class upper/division one degree in the British system) C (ECTS-system) The GPA is the average of the bachelor’s course grades weighed by course/study load. Admission, however, will not be granted based on a sufficient grade point average alone. In addition: you must have obtained the Bachelor's degree within 4 years advanced knowledge in Molecular and Cellular biology. you must have completed a Bachelor's Thesis (experimental work or field work) of at least 15 EC. The subject of the Bachelor's thesis must show affinity with the track and/or cluster of your choice. Furthermore, the track Infection and Immunity requires advanced (2nd and 3rd year BSc level) knowledge in immunology. Selection criteria Up to, but no more than, 240 students are admitted to the Master’s Programme Biomedical Sciences. If more than the maximum number of candidates are found suitable, candidates will be selected on (in random order): Study programme GPA score Study progress Bachelor’s programme Subject of Bachelor’s thesis Motivation There is no pre-Master's programme available. 3. English language proficiency Your ability to write and speak in English must be at an academic level. To prove your level of English please provide us with your scores of one of the following tests: the TOEFL Test, the test of the International English Language Testing Service (Academic IELTS) a Cambridge Examination Score.

Career opportunities

Four out of five graduates of the Medical Biology programme find a job within a year of obtaining their Master's degree. Approximately half continue on in the field of research as PhD students or as researchers in industry, hospitals or institutes. Other graduates find work in education as secondary school teachers or information officers in medical NGOs. About ten percent of graduates become policy makers in areas such as government, pharmaceutical business or medical organisations.
