Program overview
This programme offers a systematic attempt to address structurally embedded prescriptions concerning gender relations and sexual behavior that are on a par with other analytical variables such as class, ethnicity, religion, age, or political views.

Bachelor's degree
Students with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology or in another closely related discipline (including economics and psychology) are invited to apply, provided they meet all other entry requirements.
International diplomas are evaluated on the basis of advice from professional diploma evaluators. The minimum level of the diploma should be equivalent to three years of Dutch university education.
Social Sciences
Students who have obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology can be admitted to the programme, provided that they have completed 6 ECTS credits in the field of gender and/or sexuality.
Sociological theory
Applicants are expected to have a solid basis in the field of sociological theory (or the equivalent) of at least 30 ECTS, earned during previous education.
At least (an equivalent of) 6 ECTS credits of sociological theory is expected to be taken in the field of gender and/or sexuality.
Research methodology
Applicants should have a solid basis in both qualitative and quantitative social sciences research methodology as demonstrated by the completion of (the equivalent of) at least 30 ECTS during previous study. Upon entry to the Master's programme, students are expected to be able to:
Make a solid research design
Understand advantages and disadvantages of different research methods and a mixed methods approach
Develop and carry out (simple) surveys
Interpret the results of surveys
Carry out statistical analysis, preferably with SPSS or similar software
Conduct interviews
Analyse the results of interview
Possibly use historical research methods for the purpose of triangulation
English language proficiency
As the Master's programme will be highly demanding and fully taught in English, a high level of English language proficiency is expected of all applicants. All students must be able to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions and give presentations in English.
Career opportunities
An education in the social sciences will impart a broad range of skills that easily translate into a multitude of careers. The programme gives students a good basis to pursue their studies at the PhD level. Students with an excellent academic record will be encouraged to complete their Master's studies with the development of a proposal for PhD study at the University of Amsterdam.
