Program overview

The building industry has a growing need for design professionals with advanced knowledge and skills in their discipline and the ability to collaborate effectively with other designers, investors, contractors, and project managers, through knowledge of whole-building design and performance, integrated design of sustainable buildings, and digital methods for planning, designing, constructing, and operating buildings. This Master’s is a practice-focused degree for students with engineering or architecture backgrounds to gain professional, work-ready building design skills. There is also a part-time option available for those working in the industry and wanting to upskill. Students can receive their master’s in the following endorsements: Integrated Building Design Structural Engineering Building Services and Energy Engineering (not offered in 2020; to be confirmed for 2021 start). The MArchEng requires 120 points of coursework. Topics available may include human factors in building design, building modelling and integrated design, building environmental control, and structural assessment and retrofit.

Students should have achieved a bachelor’s degree with First or Second Class Honours in a subject related to building design, or equivalent; or a postgraduate diploma in an equivalent subject. It is strongly advised to have at least one year of professional practice experience before applying. English language requirements: IELTS Academic: an average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking TOEFL iBT: total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening. TOEFL PBT: with a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5 Pearson Test of English (Academic): with an overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50
