University of Leicester

The university offers over 350 degree programmes across three academic colleges: medicine, biological sciences and psychology, science and engineering, and arts and humanities. Its ethos emphasises a cross-disciplinary approach, innovation and collaboration.
Based in the city of the same name, Leicester has a youthful feel and boasts the largest number of people aged 19 and under in the East Midlands region. Although it’s the tenth largest city in the UK, it has an abundance of green spaces making it easy to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life. Its main campus, which backs onto 69 acres of park land, is often referred to as the university’s ‘back garden'.
Leicester is one of the most ethnically diverse areas of the UK and its university lays claim to a long-standing record on social inclusiveness. The city is also among the most economical places to live in the country. In 2015 it was ranked top by HSBC for the second year in a row for being the UK’s most affordable university.
Among the university’s claims to fame are the invention of genetic fingerprinting in 1984 by Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys and the more recent discovery of King Richard III’s mortal remains in a Leicester council car park.

In order to study at the University of Leicester, your written and spoken English must be good enough for you to fully understand, and benefit from, your degree course.
You can demonstrate your English language ability in any one of these ways:
Education in English: You attended secondary (high) school or university in a country approved by the University as teaching in the medium of English.
IELTS: The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education. Every degree page on our website specifies a minimum IELTS score.
Selected Indian degrees: An undergraduate degree from one of the universities listed on the India page.
Other tests and qualifications: Use this table to see whether the score or mark you achieved matches the IELTS score for your chosen degree course. Please note that any test must be less than two years old at the start of your degree course.
Please note: you do not need to submit a Secure English Language Test (SELT) in order to study a degree course at the University of Leicester.
If you are an international student who does not currently meet our entry requirements, you can improve your English language skills at Leicester before starting your degree with a pre-sessional language course at our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU). Each course consists of 21 hours of intensive language training per week Small international classes - maximum 16 students, but usually no more than 12. Your current language level will determine how many weeks you spend on the course.
Tier 4 visa language requirements: if you need a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you will also need to meet the English language requirements for that. These requirements are set by the UK Government.

You should check in your own country whether scholarships are available for study overseas, either from your government or other organisations. A scholarships search can be reached from the Education UK database. The British Council, which has offices around the world, can also provide information about financial assistance. Scholarships will not normally cover your entire funding needs, so you are likely to need to look at a combination of funding sources, which may include scholarships, grants, loans and personal or family savings.
Almost all scholarships, including those offered by the University, offer only partial funding support, usually in the form of a contribution to fees. Most scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, and competition from well-qualified students is fierce. You also need to plan ahead, so that you can meet the deadlines for scholarship applications. Please note that you cannot apply for University scholarships until you have been offered a place.
