Overview
In the 21st century, with the world’s popular culture changing almost minute by minute, it’s a bold statement for any school system of any educational bent or religious denomination to claim its schools are at the very “heart of the community” they serve. It’s an even bolder statement to say those same schools offer “success for each” and “a place for all”. But that’s what Waterloo Region’s Catholic Schools have been doing since 1836. In 2011 Waterloo Region’s Catholic Schools marked 175 years of Catholic education in Waterloo Region
The Waterloo Catholic District School Board – the corporate body overseeing Waterloo Region’s Catholic Schools – protects and promotes a tradition of education excellence first begun in a one-room schoolhouse 1836. Today, we’re the eighth-largest Catholic school system in Ontario:
- 43 elementary schools (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8)
- 5 secondary schools (Grade 9 to Grade 12)
- 4 adult and continuing education campuses
- 2.5 million sq. ft. of floor space in schools — on more than 400 acres of land
- 40,000 elementary, secondary and adult/continuing education students
- Students from 118 countries – speaking more than 118 languages
- 3,500 full & part-time staff
- 96,000 Catholic ratepayers
- 27% of area students attend Catholic schools
