Programs of McGill University

Biology and Mathematics Bachelor of Science

Montreal , Canada

Biology is the study of life. The programs offered by the Department of Biology provide students with an introduction to the broad spectrum of Biological Sciences in contrast to more specialized programs in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology and Anatomy and Cell Biology. This Joint Major program is built on a selection of mathematics and biology courses that recognize mathematical biology as a field of research, with three streams within biology: Ecology and Evolutionary Ecology, Molecular Evolution, and Neurosciences. This program provides a solid background for those interested in careers related to environmental protection, wildlife management, biotechnology and genetic engineering. A B.Sc. degree in Biology can also lead to post-graduate studies, entry to professional schools in medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, agriculture, nursing, education and library science, and research careers in universities, research institutes, hospitals, and industrial or governmental laboratories.

Chemistry Bachelor of Science

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

Chemistry bills itself as the Central Science; central because on one side it is the basis of biochemistry and medical research, while on the other side it merges with the fields of solid state and theoretical physics. It is at the heart of the production of most of the consumer goods and infrastructures around us. Chemistry is also at the fore front of the research seeking to solve some of the most daunting challenges faced by humanity, including global warming, scarcity of fossil resources, energy efficiency, food production and health. Undergraduate teaching is a core mission of the Department of Chemistry at McGill. The department offers a unique learning environment to its students, with world-class professors, AV equipped facilities and fully renovated, innovative teaching labs. The department offers many undergraduate programs featuring chemistry, a large list of courses and many opportunities to perform research.

Computer Science and Biology Bachelor of Science

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

Life Sciences are becoming increasingly quantitative and analytical, and integrative. This program will train students in the fundamentals of biology - with a focus on molecular biology - and will give them computational and mathematical skills needed to manage, analyze, and model large biological datasets. Two integrative features of the program are a three-credit joint independent studies course, and a one-credit seminar. The program fills an important gap in the undergraduate programs at McGill, as no existing program allows students to get a solid training in these two increasingly interconnected fields.

Computer Science Master of Science

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

This program is designed for students with a strong interest in research in computer science who hold at least the equivalent of an undergraduate minor in CS. This program combines a strong course component with a research thesis. It is the usual (but not mandatory) entry point for students who wish to do a Ph.D., but is also the program of choice for students who want to find challenging and exciting jobs after their master's.

Economics (Desautels Faculty of Management) Bachelor of Commerce

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

Studying Economics is an excellent way to develop one's quantitative ability, abstract reasoning, and knowledge of important features of the way the world works. How do societies decide what to produce, how much of each commodity to produce, who consumes what and how consumption patterns vary over time? How do individuals make decisions on their education, their work, on where they live, on how much of each good to consume, on how much to save and on how the savings are invested? What determines prices, exchange rates, interest rates and the level of inflation? How does the globalization of the Canadian economy affect various sectors of the Canadian economy? Economics students learn about these and many other issues central to the well-being of societies. Some economists focus on understanding why certain events occur; some try to devise and study economic policies that make a society better off, and yet others are involved in development of theoretical and statistical tools of analysis.

English: Cultural Studies Bachelor of Arts

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

Cultural Studies concentrates on analysis of forms of cultural expression and symbolic interaction, and of the various media through which these may be disseminated and transformed. Such study concerns symbolic form, aesthetically-based forms of analysis, and the various modes of criticism and theory relevant to media which contain both verbal and non-verbal elements. The aim is above all to hone students' analytical and interpretive skills while introducing them to specific critical approaches to cultural studies. This is not a major in journalism or communications; and while many of our graduates go on to do creative work in a variety of media, instruction in film and video production is not part of the curriculum.

Food Science Bachelor of Science in Food Science

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

Food Science is a chemistry-based program which integrates many of the natural sciences such as microbiology, physics, biochemistry, and sensory analysis. The program uses the principles of engineering to help understand many of the physical processes and chemical interactions involved in new food product development, food processing, food analysis, manufacturing, and storage. Food Scientists work on the discovery of new bio-active ingredients and their incorporation into functional foods and ensure that all new products are safe and free from contamination. They also study how flavours and colours develop when food is baked, roasted or fried.

Gender, Sexuality, Feminist, and Social Justice Studies Bachelor of Arts

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

The Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies (IGSF) has consolidated the previous Women’s Studies and Sexual Diversity Studies programs into one, newly titled program in Gender, Sexuality, Feminist, and Social Justice Studies (GSFS). A careful analysis of the current programs in Women’s Studies and Sexual Diversity Studies indicates that critical approaches embedded in feminist and social justice frameworks have historically been integral to both fields. The Gender, Sexuality, Feminist, and Social Justice Studies program recognizes social justice as a driving concept inherent to the study of gender, sexuality, and feminism. Social justice frameworks incorporate critical race studies, disability studies, and Indigenous studies into the examination of gender, sexuality, and feminism. Students can look forward to an interdisciplinary education grounded in these fields. In addition to the courses offered by the Institute, students will be able to take courses from a list of complementary offerings from departments throughout the Faculty of Arts.

Microbiology and Immunology Bachelor of Science

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, unicellular eukaryotes, and parasites. Microorganisms play an important role in human and animal disease; food production (bread, cheese, wine); decay and spoilage; and contamination and purification of water and soil. Microbiologists study these tiny, self-replicating machines to understand the basic principles of life: growth, metabolism, cell division, control of gene expression, response to environmental stimuli. Microbiologists are also concerned with controlling or harnessing microorganisms for the benefit of people, by isolating antibiotics or producing vaccines to protect against disease, and by developing and perfecting microorganisms for industrial uses. Immunology is the study of the molecular and cellular basis of host resistance and immunity to external agents such as pathogenic microorganisms. Immunologists study the mechanisms by which the body recognizes foreign antigens, generates appropriate antibodies to an enormously diverse spectrum of antigens, and sequesters and kills invading microorganisms. Their discoveries lead to vaccination against disease; transfusions and organ transplants; allergies; cancer; autoimmune diseases; and immune-deficiency diseases such as AIDS. Antibodies may soon be used in conjunction with antibiotics or chemical agents as specific “magic bullets” to diagnose disease and attack microbes and cancers.
