Programs of McGill University

Microbiology and Immunology Master of Science

Montreal , Canada

The primary goal of this program is to provide students with unique opportunities to learn experimental designs and fundamental research techniques, and objectively synthesize information from scientific literature. These tools enable the students to focus on major research topics offered by the Department: molecular microbiology, mycology, microbial physiology, virology, genetics, immunology, drug design, and aspects of host-parasite relationships. Each M.Sc. student chooses their preferred major research area and research supervisor. Following an interview, the student is presented with a research topic and offered a studentship (amounts vary). Each student must register for our graduate courses (two seminars, two reading and conference courses, and three current topics). If pertinent to the student’s research program, the research adviser may advise the student to take additional courses.

Music Theory Bachelor of Music

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

The teaching and research of theorists are concentrated upon developing models and methods for understanding musical languages. How are specific pieces of music put together and how may this be generalized to relate to the way other pieces of music are composed? First and second year theory classes incorporate a combination of writing skills and analysis, whereas teaching in upper years focuses upon analysis. More specialized courses in such subjects as the application of mathematical models to music analysis and Renaissance-style counterpoint are available to the advanced theory major.

Nutrition Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences (Dietetics and Nutrition)

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

The BSc Nutrition Major is a 3 year undergraduate degree (plus a U0 Freshman year for students from outside Quebec). At its core, it deals with how diet and nutrition affect human health and disease risk. It offers you exciting opportunities to specialize in one of 5 concentrations, to incorporate research experience, travel for field studies, or a Minor in your program. It does not lead to professional licensure as a Dietitian/Nutritionist. However, it is excellent preparation for many careers including medical school, veterinary school and other professional schools, for graduate school, or for work in the food, pharma or other industry, government or NGO, or global health organizations.

Philosophy Bachelor of Arts

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

Philosophy is a particular way, or ways, of thinking. It emphasizes clarity in expression (both written and verbal expression) and rigor in argument. The BA in philosophy is not a professional qualification. Beyond its intrinsic interest, the study of philosophy may prepare students from graduate work in Philosophy or for work in a variety of other fields -- law and business, for example. As the interdisciplinary discipline par excellence, philosophy also maintains and encourages ties with other fields, e.g., Psychology, Linguistics, History, Political Science, Mathematics, Physics, Biology. The McGill Department of Philosophy has a continuing commitment to providing an intensive yet broad-based philosophical education. The interests and work of members of the Department are wide ranging both in subject matter and historical era and are supplemented by Associated faculty from English, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, and Psychiatry. These interests are reflected in the wide range of courses which are offered.

Understanding cell and system physiology holds the key to discovering new ways of preventing and curing disease. Research in the department focuses on: ion channels and transporters, gene transcription, signal transduction, nuclear transport, synapse formation, nerve regeneration, neuroscience, immunology, and biomathematics of physiological systems. Come and discover research in our Department. Three programs, Liberal, Major, and Honours are offered by the Department of Physiology. All students entering the Department initially register in the Faculty program. The first year of a degree program in physiology is generally like that of other sciences, with the student studying common core courses in biology, chemistry, biochemistry and physiology.

Montreal , Canada

The M.A. program is generally recognized as among the most demanding and rewarding in Canada. A main purpose of the M.A. degree is to demonstrate an ability to design and execute with competence a major piece of research, comparable to a full‐length article in a scholarly journal. The length will vary with the nature of the topic. A thesis that contains considerable data analysis might be well developed in 50 pages, while an institutional or historical study would generally be longer.

Psychology (Faculty of Arts) Bachelor of Arts

McGill University

Montreal , Canada

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour. It is both a social and a biological science. As a social science, psychology examines the social nature of human beings and the influence that culture, group membership, and relationships have on individual personality, thought, and behaviour. The study of psychological problems often involves knowledge drawn from other disciplines such as biology, physiology, linguistics, sociology, philosophy, and mathematics. For this reason a student with varied interests can frequently find a place for these interests in psychology. As such, undergraduate courses in psychology may prove of considerable value to students planning careers in professional fields other than psychology, such as medicine, law, education, social work, communication disorders, or business and industry.
