Program overview

This MA programme combines both theory and practical skills and begins in the first semester with a course on the principles of teaching a language. You’ll also consider how to design a teaching course, develop it and then consider different methods of assessment for students. You’ll then go on to look at how to teach English and Chinese specifically. In the second semester, you’ll examine a diverse range of subjects including Language Policies, Markets and Technologies (including the social, economic and environmental implications of language); Research in Language Learning and Pedagogy, looking at the methods and activities of teaching. In the final semester you’ll have the opportunity to do a research project, with or without an accredited internship, both of which will enable you to use the knowledge and skills learned on the programme. Those students who focus on teaching English do not need to know Chinese, but if you’re interested in teaching Chinese you must know English which is required for entering the programme at the University.
