Program overview
Applied Psychology provides theoretical foundations and research or measurement methods for many social science disciplines and beyond, including education, management, marketing, and other business administrations. As students pursue graduate studies in psychology in the future, applied psychology's connections to many other disciplines will become more obvious and relevant. Because of such disciplinary characteristics of applied psychology, undergraduate training in applied psychology has many applications in other professions; programmes of many other disciplines typically include some relevant psychology courses. For example, applied psychology courses such as “Learning and Behavior”, “Educational Psychology”, “Psychological Testing”, “Memory”, etc., provide important foundations for education disciplines; while courses such as “Organizational Psychology”, “Psychology of Leadership”, “Personality and Individual Differences”, “Social Psychology”, “Cross Cultural Psychology”, “Psychological Testing”, etc., provide relevant foundations for corporate management and human resources management.
Undergraduate major in applied psychology will (1) allow students to develop basic skills across the major areas of Applied Psychology; (2) provide students with training in scientific research methodology that is essential for conducting research in applied psychology and other social sciences; (3) train students to develop the ability and skills for critical analysis and reasoning; (4) provide high quality education and training in Applied Psychology so that graduates will have good background for careers in multiple areas, including human resource management, marketing and sales, public relations, counselling, social work, law enforcement, and education; (5) provide training in applied psychology based on international standards that will make it not only possible, but highly likely, for graduates to pursue advanced (applied or research oriented) postgraduate training in different areas of applied psychology (e.g., developmental, cognitive, and social psychology, as well as educational psychology, organizational psychology, and clinical psychology) either locally, in the Greater China region, or in other countries; (6) train students to conduct and disseminate research findings to academics, policy makers and concerned professionals or organizations and citizens.
