Overview

Unitec was founded as Carrington Technical Institute in 1976. In 2006, Unitec opened its Waitakere Campus in the centre of Henderson, West Auckland. The campus is a joint development with the former Waitakere City Council and includes the new Waitakere Central Library. Unitec's Waitakere campus offers mainly introductory computing, preparing for study, and health and social work courses.

In August 2011, Unitec opened a campus in Albany, on Auckland's North Shore, but it was closed in December 2016.

There are also three libraries across the two existing campuses:

  1. Mt Albert, Te Puna Library
  2. Waitakere Campus Library

Student life

Our international students talk about how Unitec - and New Zealand - is a place that welcomes all cultures and languages. They see the people of New Zealand to be friendly and open, and there are so many international students who love studying at Unitec. A highlight for many of our students is when they are welcomed onto the Marae by our Māori students and staff.
