The MS degree concentrates on establishing a sound theoretical foundation and on exposing students to advanced developments in electrical and computer engineering. The critical thinking and high level of mathematical and algorithmic facility required by graduate courses allow MS graduates to provide technical leadership and contribute to innovative research and development.
The PhD program in electrical and computer engineering at Brigham Young University emphasizes high-impact research, publication of scholarly work, and participation in projects funded by the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and a variety of other federal agencies, foundations, and companies. PhD students collaborate with a faculty advisor on a topic that may have a lasting influence on theoretical understanding or on professional practice. Coursework is required on advanced topics in electrical and computer engineering. Students may also take courses in related fields, including physics, mathematics, or computer science.
Early childhood education prepares teachers who, having gained their own liberal education, help preschool, kindergarten, and primary grade children learn by improving the teaching children receive in the home, school, church, and community. Elementary Education emphasizes ways to help elementary students enhance their thinking abilities, build their confidence in exploring new ideas, and become self-motivated, independent learners.
The MA in English program enables students to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes that have application in contemporary society. The program may appeal to students who plan to enter such careers as teaching, editing, and writing; to those who seek an advanced liberal arts degree for preparation in library science or public service; to those who plan to go on for a doctorate in English or a related area; and to those who wish to continue studies for personal satisfaction.
Entrepreneurship students will learn and apply innovation and business theories in hands-on tasks, projects, and case discussions. Pursuit of the MS degree in environmental science provides students with research and education opportunities in environmental protection and remediation and in plant growth and physiology. Students will select graduate course work in soil science, biology, and environmentally related courses taught in departments across the campus.
Graduate programs within the Department of Exercise Sciences are designed to provide an atmosphere where increased knowledge and practice prepare students to become leaders in their professions, families, communities, and the world. Instruction takes the form of lectures and laboratory courses, seminars, examinations, independent study, research, and teaching experiences. In addition to working with department faculty, graduate students have the option of performing cross disciplinary research with faculty in nutrition science that research topics of interest to exercise science.
This program prepares students for leadership at the highest level of their profession. Most students become university or college faculty. Students are prepared in the scientific bases of exercise science, well acquainted with the scientific literature, able to teach college courses, and able to do independent research. Three areas of specialization are available.
