Program overview

This is a four year full-time degree course. The four years are broken down as follows: Year One: learning and developing essential background knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology. Year Two: building on the four areas of study in year one from an environmental viewpoint, as well as develop IT and computing skills. Modules include Microbiology and Genetics, Pollution and Biosphere, Kinetics and Thermodynamics and Linear Algebra. Year Three: students choose two out of the three streams of biotechnology, chemistry and physics, developing specialised skills in your areas of interest. They will explore employer-relevant environmental issues, including legislation and health and safety, and have the opportunity to work on a paid industrial (INTRA) placement. Practical work is conducted in laboratories and through onsite and field trip visits. Year Four: students continue with their chosen specialism. Additionally, they’ll carry out a semester-long research project, with topics offered from across the entire Science and Health faculty.

A minimum of six Leaving Certificate subjects at Grade 06/H7, to include the subjects English OR Irish AND the subject Mathematics. In addition, applicants must present at least two subjects at grade H5. In addition to the general entry requirements for admission to the university the following entry requirements apply Minimum of O3 or H6 in Mathematics and minimum of O3 or H5 in one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics with Chemistry or Agricultural Science
