Biology is the study of life and of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution. Of all the sciences, biology is perhaps the most closely related to everyday life. We are exposed daily to news and documentary reports on biological topics such as genetic engineering, environmental conservation, pollution, disease and immunology, social and behavioural interactions and population growth.
Memorial University’s Department of Biology is home to over 100 graduate students along with 30 full-time faculty members and numerous cross-appointment faculty from other academic departments. Approximately 20 researchers from outside Memorial University, many employed in government laboratories (agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and wildlife), hold adjunct appointments with the Department and contribute to the graduate program as co-supervisors and supervisory committee members.

Chemistry is the science of the composition, structure, properties and reactions of matter, especially of atomic and molecular systems. The synthesis of new drugs, the production of novel materials and the monitoring and improvement of our environment all involve the science of chemistry. The modern-day subject of chemistry is a dynamically-changing science that is about cutting-edge discoveries and the use of state-of-the-art techniques and technologies that impact almost every aspect of human life and almost every aspect of the development of human society. It is easy to understand why the field of chemistry is often described as the central science.
The Department of Chemistry of Memorial University is one of the largest Chemistry departments in Atlantic Canada, with 23 faculty, 13 permanent laboratory instructors and instructional assistants, and a number of support and research staff. Over 60 graduate students currently work in the Department’s research laboratories. Faculty members’ research interests touch on all major subfields of Chemistry, including analytical, physical, inorganic, organic, theoretical/computational, environmental/marine, and materials.
Classics is the study of the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations from which our own modern civilization has developed and which continue to influence and shape our modern world. Computer engineering at Memorial includes a mandatory, integrated co-operative education program in which students gain up to two years of practical work experience. You will take courses in computer hardware, software and communications systems and learn about circuit analysis, systems and signals, digital logic design, electronics, software design and implementation, computer architecture and microprocessors, computer networking, concurrent programming and real-time operating systems. You will participate in design projects throughout the program, including a team capstone design project in your final year that may span computer and electrical engineering and involve students from both majors.
Computer Science Department offers individual courses and full programs so any student can develop their computer skills and interest regardless of their career trajectory. Memorial’s Computer Industry Internship Option (CIIO) provides an opportunity for you to obtain rewarding placements in computer industries. The internship program includes a paid placement of eight to 16 months so you can explore career options and develop workplace skills at the same time.
It offers major, minor and honours programs leading to either a bachelor of arts (BA) or bachelor of science (B.Sc.) in computer science, as well as a B.Sc. honours program in computer science (software engineering).
