Program overview

European Studies deals with the economic, political, legal, cultural and linguistic aspects of European Union. It also works toward achieving a more holistic perspective on the political system and its underlying processes. This can be illustrated with reference to a number of current issues of major concern to us all: Europe is lagging behind in growth and productivity, not only compared to the US, but also compared to the BRICS countries; Europe is lagging behind in innovation (e.g. fewer new patents); Climate change is a global problem, with a major impact on Europe; Widening North-South divide in the Eurozone (e.g. Greece); The ageing European population; Immigration, illegal and otherwise, is perceived as a problem, yet Europe still has a shortage of low-cost labour; The EU’s capacity to tackle these problems is hindered by ineffectiveness and lack of popular support. To solve these problems, Europe needs researchers at universities, consultancies or think-tanks who are capable of analysing them and devising intelligent, effective solutions. There is also a need for professionals who can contribute to legitimate, efficient and effective policies in: International organizations (United Nations, World Bank, IMF, OECD) EU institutions Local, regional and national ministries Private sector (multinationals, interest groups, NGOs) The Master’s programme in European Studies offers you the perfect preparation for a graduate career in this fascinating field and for helping Europe to solve its societal problems.
